My first Software Defined Radio

I have recently bought the new Softrock Esemble II Receiver. This is a Sofware Defined Radio, it’s based on Si570 a local programmable oscillator and an Atmel ATTiny85 micro-controller unit, which works as a USB device.

The Quadrature Sampling Detector (QSD) acts as an output mixer, so then you need a stereo soundcard with a good bandwidth.

Today I have conducted the first test.

I didn’t know what was the correct configuration for my PC. I must note my setup: I have a MacBook 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB of ram DDR3 and 250GB. For this test I have used Windows 7 into a Virtual Machine through Parallels software…

So, to properly configure my new SDR, I have found 2 precious links:

The PC needs a correct driver to recognize Si570 local oscillator and so to properly install the Softrock Esemble II RX. I have followed, without problems, the guide of PE0FKO (the second link before). Then there are some softwares for the SDR.

I have chosen the PowerSDR-IQ 1.19.3.15, this is my screenshot:

I have also recorded an audio file during the CQ of 9X0TL on 15m today, in this file I have test various filter and dsp configuration, you can listen the differences:

Echolink for Android

È stato rilasciato il programma Echolink per smartphone basati su piattaforma Android. Il software dovrebbe possedere tutte le normali funzioni di Echolink. Io non sono in grado di effettuare un test su questa piattaforma. Chi avesse questa possibilità può lasciare commenti o scrivere magari un articolo esemplificativo del funzionamento. Io sono a disposizione per ulteriori chiarimenti.

Per evitare numerosi contatti ricevuti in precedenza faccio notare che il team di sviluppo di Echolink ha specificato che al momento non è in cantiere nessun’altra versione per altre piattaforme, e con questo mi riferisco a symbian OS o Windows Mobile.

CQ WW SSB Contest 2009 – Results

The final scores of CQ WW SSB Contest 2009 has been released today by committee!

I am third for Italy! A good result considering that I hadn’t a good setup on low bands, so for next year I will increase low bands antennas…stay tuned!

I Transistor

Presso la sezione A.R.I. di Bari stiamo portando avanti

da un pò di tempo il corso per chi intende sostenere l’esame per la licenza di Radioamatore.

Oggi mi toccherà spiegare il funzionamento dei transistor nelle loro varie forme.

Ho approntato per l’occasione un file PDF che potrebbe a primo avviso risultare difficile per i più, ma che in linea di massima offre una panoramica completa su questo mondo.

Per coloro che stanno preparando l’esame vale la regola che ci siamo dati fin dall’inizio, il programma di esame e si vasto, ma non molto particolareggiato, è nostra intenzione però fornire tutte quelle informazioni e nozioni per potersi davvero avventurare in maniera consapevole in questo bellissimo hobby della radio.

IQ7DV ARI DX INTERNATIONAL 2010

Nel fine settimana scorso si è svolto l’annuale appuntamento del contest internazionale organizzato dal’ A.R.I., ovvero l’A.R.I. International DX Contest.

La nostra sezione ha partecipato con il nominativo di sezione IQ7DV. Alcuni volenterosi soci hanno messo su due stazioni

attrezzate per l’occasione: una dedicata alle bande alte (10-15-20m) con una direttiva Optibeam ob11-3 e alla banda dei 40m con un dipolo rotativo della Eco Antenne, la radio era un ICOM 756 pro3 e l’amplificatore era un ACOM 1000 (500W). La seconda stazione era attiva sulle bande basse e in RTTY con dipoli filari e con una antenna per sola ricezione autocostruita (su progetto di K9AY).

È stata l’occasione per vivere una bella esperienza di gruppo dove non è mancato il divertimento ed è stata anche una buona palestra per sperimentare nuove tecniche e allenarsi all’attività di contest.

Rispetto all’esperienza dell’anno scorso il setup era più completo, ma purtroppo in parte è mancata la propagazione e in parte pare sia calata anche la partecipazione a questo evento.

A mente fredda e con i bollettini propagativi alla mano (vedi imagine sotto) in effetti il forte vento solare ha creato una forte attività geomagnetica ai poli, questo, come sta avvenendo da un pò di settimane, ha causato una buona dose di rumore sulle bande basse: da parte nostra a log risultano solo 2 qso in 160, banda del tutto inutilizzabile, mentre sui 40 e 80m si è lavorato grazie all’uso della K9AY che ha permesso di discriminare qualche segnale più basso soprattutto in 80m. Osservando il grafico (concesso in esclusiva e in anteprima da dxcoffe.com) si evince che dall’inizio dell’anno, dove avevamo riscontrato notevoli picchi nell’attività solare che ci avevano fatto ben sperare, ad oggi ci troviamo di fronte ad un decremento della propagazione notevole (parte evidenziata in giallo).

WPX SSB 2010 – Claimed Score

The WPX committee has published the official claimed score for the 2010 SSB edition.

My score seems to be very very good…So now I’m waiting only the confirm.

6Y7K QSL’s Status

Today I have received the second qsl’s pack via my bureau. There many italians, europeans and japaneses qsls.
I have answer back to the first pack and qsls are now in the boxes ready to go to Milan at italian bureau center!
All direct qsls received were been send back with confirmations!
Some qso are not present in the log of 6Y7K’s activity, so please search in the log online before send me qsls!
These are the big confusion on my table!!!

WPX SSB 2010 @T70A a perfect SO80LP!

I have take part at WPX SSB 2010 from San Marino Republic with my friend Giorgio IZ4AKS.

He has operated in SO20HP category and I have made my WPX in SO80LP category.

I have not a good experience about 80mts. I would thank to all members of A.R.R.S.M. for this great opportunity.

I made some strategic errors due to few hours of sleep.

But it was a wonderful contest, the setup was perfect: a full size 1/4 vertical for TX, 3 directional beverages (one for N-E dir., one for W-E dir., one for S dir.) for RX, my FT-950.

I have heard beautiful signals, in particular from USA during the morning daylights. I have made just few QSOs during the morning and first afternoon with Italian and German, I hoped better. Despite the excellent path to Asia,I was not able to log any JA. It was a pity!

IZ4AKS/BY1RX another time!

Giorgio IZ4AKS is another time in Beijing, capital city of China.

Yesterday he visited the clubstation B1Z and he could again make some contacts as IZ4AKS/BY1RX. In this occasion he have tried first 10m band, but the conditions were no so good. Then he has qsy on 15m where the situation was better.

Giorgio has transmitted for an hour circa with a good rate, circa 150 qso. Good opening for Europe, good response from Italy and also some good contact from Africa.
